The notion and interpretation of vulnerability is primary in my work. When a viewer looks at my paintings, they see the process by which I created them: my sensibilities, aesthetic and truth. My work can be profound statements which seek to invite a viewer to, on the most intimate level, to transcend the barriers of exclusion and delusion. A lofty goal, I realize, but I am attempting to give breadth of experience and voice to human truth. I want sustenance and power to be found in my work.

The use of color, negative space and zips are essential to my personal aesthetic. The stories I paint are complex and require an arsenal of tools to aid in the telling. Negative space is one of those tools. These empty spaces are vivid and alive—they are the locus of an incredible cooperation between the artist and the viewer. Another tool in my arsenal is size- I tend to paint on a large scale because this facilitates the inclusion of negative space and allows the freedom of movement that is necessary for my work. Zips and brush strokes lend my work a kinetic and tactile quality and create the illusion of dimension.

Technique is a pathway to the beating heart of my paintings, but it is not the heart itself. Gustave Flaubert said, “Be regular and ordered in your life so that you can be violent and original in your work.” What happens when elements of technique meet the spirit of my work is alchemy that I do not profess to fully understand, yet when a viewer looks at my paintings, they see the process by which I created them: my sensibilities, aesthetic and truth.
